For the seventh year, an important part of the spring Cottonwood Art Festival – to be held May 4-5, 2013 – is the Emerging Artists program. Richardson-area art students selected for this honor receive scholarships and awards, and have their work displayed at the award-winning, juried Cottonwood Art Festival. This year, one student artist will also be the first recipient of Cottonwood’s new People’s Choice Award.

The students’ work will be exhibited at the Eisemann Center’s Forrest & Virginia Green Mezzanine-Gallery (2351 Performance Dr., Richardson, TX 75082) through April 30, and at the Cottonwood Art Festival at Richardson’s Cottonwood Park in May, where art lovers will have an opportunity to purchase the works.

Through April 17, fans and patrons will be able to vote for their favorite Emerging Artist to receive the People's Choice Award. View the student exhibit at the Eisemann Center, and vote on Cottonwood’s Facebook page,

Sponsored by Neighborhood Credit Union, the Emerging Artists program is designed to mentor students in the art world. Art teachers encourage their students to express themselves artistically and learn how to exhibit their work. Neighborhood Credit Union will award scholarships and prize ribbons at a reception honoring the art students.

The program is unique in that it is open only to art students in high school and college. Each student develops an art concept and an artist’s statement, and produces images of their work. After review by their art instructor, student artwork is submitted to members of the Cottonwood Art Festival jury.

Eleven students from four Richardson Independent School District high schools have been named as 2013 Emerging Artists:
