Richardson's Director of Library Services, Steve Benson, will retire from the City of Richardson at the end of June, after nearly 27 years of service.
Benson joined the Richardson Public Library staff as a librarian in 1987, served as Librarian II-Dynix System Administrator from 1994 to 1996, and Librarian II Supervisor, Technical Services from 1996 to 2006. He was promoted to Assistant Director in 2006 and Director in February of 2008.
"The Library has always been and will continue to be a tremendous asset to the Richardson community, and I am honored to have been able to serve as its Director for the past six years," Benson said. "I will miss the talented staff at the Library, and the fantastic leadership team at the City. But most of all, I will miss interacting with our patrons each day."
Benson and his wife, Cynthia, plan to travel extensively in their retirement. Cynthia Benson is also retiring at the end of the month, after nearly 23 years of service to the City. She is the computer operations supervisor in the Information Technology Services Department.
"All of us in Richardson wish Steve and Cynthia well, and both of them have made such tremendous contributions to the City and to the Richardson community," City Manager Dan Johnson said. "During Steve’s tenure, use of the Library has grown significantly, and that's in large part to the work that he has done to embrace technology and to add innovative programs and services."
Benson holds a master's of public administration from the University of Texas at Dallas, a master's of library science from the University of Wisconsin and a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin.
He is a member of the American Library Association, Public Library Association, Texas Library Association and the American Society of Public Administrators. He has served on the boards of NETWORK of Community Ministries, Richardson Reads One Book and Richardson Adult Literacy Center. Benson is a Leadership Richardson graduate and completed the Richardson Citizens Fire Academy. He is also a member of the Richardson Rotary Club.
