MS Update for Print (2)

Richardson’s Main Street area is undergoing major changes. Chartered in 1873, Richardson was generally centered between present-day Greer and Phillips streets on the north and south, and between Central Expressway and Greenville Avenue on the west and east. With projects ranging from a new public safety campus and public art projects to roadway improvements along Main Street and Greenville Avenue, the City is committed to reinvestment in its traditional downtown.

In 2009, the City Council adopted a new Comprehensive Plan, which identified the Main Street area as one of the six “Enhancement/Redevelopment” zones to address the challenges many first-tier suburbs were facing due to aging development and infrastructure. In 2012, the City began a community vision and market study for Main Street and Central Expressway corridors. This study included numerous public meetings with residents and stakeholders and resulted in two rezoning initiatives that were adopted by City Council in 2015 and 2016. To learn more about the vision and zoning initiatives, click here.

One of the major themes from the community vision is improving Belt Line/Main Street for mobility, aesthetics and functionality. Several infrastructure and public art improvements on Main Street began construction on Oct. 1, 2019 and are planned to be complete by late-2020. In addition, as one of the catalysts for Main Street redevelopment, the City is constructing a new Public Safety Campus for the police headquarters and fire administration. Construction on the Public Safety Campus is expected to be complete by mid 2020. Visit the links above to learn more about the specific projects.
