Sidewalk Rehabilitation Program Update

Work continues in the City’s Sidewalk Rehabilitation program, with progress being made toward the completion of the five regions approved for funding in the 2015 Bond Program. Region 3 was completed last year and construction is currently taking place in Region 1, scheduled for completion in April. Next up is Region 2 followed by Regions 4 and 5. When sidewalk repairs are finished in the five regions, it will mark the completion of a rehabilitation cycle of all 27 City sidewalk regions.

Countdown to Wildflower! 2018: Vendor, Volunteer Applications Being Accepted

The City’s 26th annual Wildflower! Arts and Music Festival is less than 125 days away (May 18-20), so it’s time for vendors and volunteers to sign up. Food vendors wishing to be a part of WF! Eats may submit press kits through Feb. 25. Applications from artisans and craftspersons wishing to sell their work at WF! MarketPlace will be accepted through March 16. 

No sign up deadline is established for volunteers, as slots fill quickly. Festival volunteers receive a free T-shirt and two one-day passes for a four-hour shift, and one additional free pass for each subsequent shift. Duties include ticket taking, handing out programs, floater, kids’ area, access control, information booth and cashiering—preferences for work areas may be noted on the application as well as preferred days and times. Anyone (age 18 and up) or any organization is eligible.

Other upcoming deadlines include the 2018 Performing Songwriter Contest (entries will be received through March 1 or until 300 applicants have applied, whichever comes first). Health Department to Host Free Childcare Training Seminar Jan. 27
The City of Richardson Health Department will offer a free training seminar for childcare providers Saturday, Jan. 27 from 8 a.m.-noon (registration begins at 7:45 a.m.) in the Grand Hall of the Richardson Civic Center/City Hall complex. A variety of guest speakers and a puppet-making session are included.

For more information and to register online, visit www.cor.net/childcaretraining. This seminar may be used for four hours of continuing education units (CEUs) for childcare providers as specified in the “Minimum Standards.” A certificate will be provided electronically after the seminar.

• “Pete the Cat” Jan. 21
  2:30 p.m. in the Hill Performance Hall. Tickets are $12-$22.
  Based on the series of books by Kimberly and James Dean, this family musical stars Pete the Cat, who gets caught rocking out after bedtime and gets sent away by the cat catcher to live with the Biddle family, to learn manners. Find out what happens when Pete attempts to get the whole family rocking, especially young Jimmy Biddle, the most organized second grader on planet earth.
  
  
  
  
• Broadway Musical “A Night With Janis Joplin” Jan. 26
  8 p.m. in the Hill Performance Hall. Tickets are $46-$64.
  A musical journey celebrating Janis Joplin and her biggest musical influences—trailblazers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, all of whom inspired Joplin to become one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest legends. Audiences will enjoy Joplin’s favorites, including “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Me and Bobby McGee” and many others.

• Pegasus Theatre’s “A Minor Case of Murder” Continues
  Thursday-Saturday evenings through Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m., in the Bank of America Theatre. Tickets are $24-$44.
  It’s New Year’s Eve 1933, and world-famous detective Harry Hunsacker is back in “Living Black and White™” as he faces one of his most puzzling cases ever, along with his paid-by-the-hour assistant Nigel Grouse, and Lt. Foster “of the real police.”

Beginning 3D Printing with Tinkercad Jan. 20

Learn to design 3D models and how to print your creations Saturday, Jan. 20 from 10:30 a.m.-noon in the Library’s Basement “Studio RPL.”

Couponing 101 Jan. 20


Natalie Road presents, “Couponing 101: Is the Price Right?” tomorrow from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Basement Program Room. Road will help adults and teens learn how to save money by practicing the bargain-hunting secrets of the pros, with insider tips on sales trends and clearance deals. Focus is on meal planning, stockpiling and combining coupons with sales.

Create Your Own Comics Jan. 20

It’s “comic central” tomorrow afternoon in the First Floor Program Room, as published author Andy Hirsch teaches kids and teens ages 10-18 how to create their own comics. Each participant will have the opportunity to create a comic to take home.

Cookies, Crafts and Crayons Jan. 25

 Come spend an hour coloring, crafting and snacking Thursday, Jan. 25 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Basement Program Room. All ages are welcome, admission is free and no registration is required. Call 972-744-4358 for more information.


Free Instruction Offered in Intermediate Microsoft Excel 2016 Jan. 26
Register now for MS Excel 2016 Intermediate Level, taking place Friday, Jan. 26 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Basement Training Room. The class is free and open to teens and adults; prerequisite is MS Excel 2016 Beginning Level or equivalent experience.

Laptops are provided. Registration is required as well as a valid Richardson Public Library card. Call 972-744-4359 for more information and to register.

Richardson Animal Shelter Pet of the Week

Meet Sandy! Lovable Sandy is a spayed female, about 3 years old, Rottweiler mix, up to date on all vaccinations, leash trained and house trained. She has been looking for a forever home since October 2017. Sandy has a sweet disposition, loves belly rubs and is wonderful around adults and kids. Please help Sandy find a forever home!
