Richardson Public Library offers access to a 3D printer. Richardson Public Library card holders in good standing with no fines are able to use this technology to learn new skills, expand their creativity and technological literacy, and to explore areas for innovation. Internet-only and TexShare cards are not acceptable.

The 3D printer is located in the Business Center, near the entrance of the Library.

The 3D printer is open to patrons ages 13 – adult. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The 3D printer uses extreme heat, low electrical voltage, and has other slight risks.  Customers assume all responsibility for any risks associated with use of the technology within the Business Center.

The Business Center will maintain the same operating hours as Richardson Public Library.

Willful misuse of the 3D printer will result in loss of use privileges for the individual and charges for damages.

Library staff will provide tips and direct customers to self-training, but will not be available for intensive or personalized instruction on 3D-printing. Customers are responsible for the safe and correct use of equipment.  Customers interested in using 3D printing technology should read the notices regarding rules of use and instruction.

The 3D printer cannot be used for creating any of the following:

  • Items in violation of local, state, or federal law.
  • Functioning weapons.
  • Offensive, obscene, or racist objects. Objects must be appropriate for a public library setting.
  • Items that violate patent, copyright, trademark, or otherwise infringe upon the intellectual property of others.

The library reserves the right to refuse to print any object. There will be a fee charged for printed items based on the finished weight of the object, 10 cents per gram with $1.00 minimum. Only library staff or designated volunteers are allowed to operate the 3D printer. Items will be printed on a first-come, first-served basis. As such, customers will likely be required to return to the library to pick up their items.
