Trails

Separated from the roadway, trails and side paths are accessible two-way paths that are available for use by both pedestrians and bicyclists. Often times these could be more desirable facility type that bike lanes on higher speed or higher traffic road ways. Neighborhood Byway

Neighborhood Byways (also called Bike Boulevards) create pleasant and convenient routes for cyclists. By encouraging safe travel speeds and discouraging cut-through traffic, these shared-use streets make it more comfortable for riders. Due to the low volume of traffic and low speeds, separated or protected bikeways are not necessary as the street design helps to create a calm traffic environment. Byways will have important bicycle and pedestrian crossing improvements, traffic calming, wayfinding signage and connectivity enhancements.

Bike Lanes

A bike lane is a portion of the roadway that is designated by signing and pavement markings for the specific use of bicycle. Some functions which bicycle lanes provide are:

  • Provides comfort for bicyclists on roadways
  • Increase the amount of lateral separation between motor vehicles and bicycles
  • Indicates the location to ride on the roadway with moving traffic and parked cars (mid-block locations and approaching intersections)
  • Increase predictability of bicyclist and motorist movements
  • Increase drivers' awareness of bicyclists while driving and when opening doors from an on-street parking space.

There are multiple types of bikes lanes which you may see while riding around Richardson.

Conventional Bike Lanes

Conventional Bike Lanes run adjacent to parked cars when parking is present. In some cases, the bike lane run curbside with no parking preset.
