Arefin Shamsul was elected to represent Richardson in the at-large Place 6 on City Council in June 2021. In addition to serving on the City Council, Arefin has been deeply involved in the community through various volunteer activities. Prior to being elected to the Council in 2021, he served as a member of the Richardson Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Building and Standards Commission for almost 10 years. He also has been a member of various other committees, including the Richardson Complete Count Committee in support of the 2020 Census, RISD Bond Steering Committee, and Richardson Chamber of Commerce Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force.
Shamsul has lived in Richardson for more than 15 years. Recently, he served as a board member for the Highland Terrace Neighborhood Association.
He is a graduate of Leadership Richardson Class XXV and Richardson Citizens Police Academy, Class 41.
Shamsul is a professional civil engineer with more than 30 years of experience. He owns and operates his own civil engineering consulting firm, specializing in municipal infrastructure. He has a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, Maryland, and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
Shamsul and his wife of more than 27 years have a son and three daughters.
