America's Reconstruction era (1865-77) after the Civil War was a turbulent time as the nation struggled with how to rebuild the South and transition four million blacks newly-freed from slavery to a free-labor society.  The Freedmen's Bureau, extablished in 1865, provided food, housing, and medical aid; established schools; and offered legal assistance. 

Dr. Bean (Author, and Assistant Professor of History and Native American Studies at East Central University in Oklahoma) will discuss the Bureau officials who assisted former slaves in transitioning to life as free people during this difficult time in American history.
