WHY DO WE SPAY & NEUTER? Spaying and neutering helps prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens from being abandoned at animal shelters. It is estimated that 8-10 million animals are taken to animal shelters every year in the United States. Sadly, only half of them ever find homes. The major contributing factor is irresponsible ownership resulting in pet overpopulation. Spaying and neutering your pet is the best way to help prevent this unnecessary tragedy. It's good for your pet! Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. It can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat. Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle. Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease. Help spread the word about spaying and neutering! Every little bit helps! One un-spayed female dog and her offspring can produce over 67,000 dogs in 7 years, and that figure is many times more for a female cat and her offspring. Richardson Animal Services thanks you in advance for being a responsible pet owner by spaying or neutering your pets. |
