FOG/Cease the Grease Awareness Campaign
Save Your Cooking Oil for Upcoming “Cease the Grease” Event
1260 Columbia Dr
Cost: Free
Nov. 18 - Dec. 5
Open 24 hours
Help our water system stay clog-free (and save yourself hundreds of dollars in plumbing bills) by avoiding pouring leftover holiday cooking oil and grease down the drain–instead, bring it to the City’s temporary oil/grease drop-off site, in the parking lot adjacent to the southernmost entrance of the Municipal Service Center off Glenville Dr. Bring cooled oil/grease in rigid plastic containers with screw-top lids (the container the oil came in may work) and simply drive up, place the container(s) in the collection bin and drive off. (DO NOT POUR oil/grease out.)
The City partners with Texas-based American BioSource to collect the oil/grease, which is recycled into biofuels such as biodiesel and biogas.
FOG (Fat, Oil & Grease) In The Home
It doesn't stop at the kitchen sink...
Fats, Oils and Grease, the residue left over from cooking meats such as bacon that hardens after it cools, can cause problems when poured down the drain and clog pipes in your home. Did you know FOG can also clog the sewer pipes under the streets that take the wastewater from your house to the treatment plant? If that happens, the wastewater can back up and come to the surface and pollute the environment. This can allow untreated sewage to run into the streets and into our storm drains. This is not only a human health hazard but, since storm drains flow to creeks and rivers, this can cause significant environmental damage and impact aquatic life forms. You can avoid unnecessary expense and damage to the sewer system by following a few simple rules.
Do
- Clean up cookware with a paper towel before rinsing to eliminate FOG.
- Prewash dishes and pans with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher.
- Place oil and grease in covered (sealable) collection containers.
- Once collection containers are full, dispose of properly in the trash.
- Avoid using the garbage disposal by scraping food scraps into trash cans.
- Cover the kitchen sink drain with a catch basket and empty into the garbage as needed.
Don’t
- Pour FOG down the drain, even in small quantities.
- Use hot water to push FOG through plumbing pipes.
- Toss food scraps down the drain.
