Home MenuApollo Road Property
In June 2014, the City of Richardson purchased a 26-acre plot of undeveloped land just west of Huffhines Park at the southwest corner of Apollo and Plano roads with the goal of turning it into a park filled with active recreational amenities. At the time, the property was purchased it was one of the few undeveloped pieces of land in the city greater than 20 acres, and City staff knew that its proximity to Huffhines Park and Huffhines Recreation Center would allow for good synergy.
The project is currently in the Activation Phase. For this project, the City is working with the design consultant Dunaway, from Fort Worth. Dunaway is the same firm that helped the City develop the Concept Plans for the Apollo Road property study in 2020-21.
The concept plan developed for the property in 2021 calls for the first phase to include a small, lighted parking lot on the north side of the property off Apollo Road and a general practice sports field. There is no specific sport this field will be designed for, it will be an open, irrigated turf area. In addition to the parking lot and practice sports field the plan is to have utilities like electric and water brought onto the site and ‘stubbed-out’ underground to be ready to access for future phases of site development.
Future phases of development could include multiple sports fields, a playground and picnic area and a hike and bike trail surrounding the perimeter of the property.
This project is being funded through Richardson’s 2021 Bond program. Total project funding is $1,000,000. That includes costs for the design and construction phases.
Construction is currently scheduled to begin sometime in 2023 and to be completed before the end of 2023.
