Explore Richardson by bike! We help all residents of Richardson experience the joys of biking and support the growing community of cycling. Richardson is proud to be named a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The City was the first in North Texas to be name a Bicycle Friendly Community in 2015 and renewed that status in 2019. Richardson continues to build and expand its bike network for all ages and abilities – whether you’re riding for fun, to work, running errands, or dropping your kids off at school.

Bike Friendly Community Bronze 2019 Sign

More than 400 miles of city streets wind through Richardson and all of them are legal for bicyclists to ride along. To promote safety, however, the City has installed more than 26 miles of bike lanes that bicycle riders are encouraged to use.

Why use your bike instead of your car?

  • Exercise benefits – improves cardiovascular health!
  • Spend less time driving and fighting traffic, which is especially worse during morning, lunch, and evening rush hours
  • Help reduce the number of cars on the road, which means fewer CO2 emissions, better air quality, and less congestion
  • Put less mileage and wear-and-tear on your car
  • Help us promote a bike culture in Richardson – supporting active transportation and a healthy lifestyle!
  • Bike + Transit – Bicycling and transit riding are two wonderful ways to get around the City and region; and now you can combine them to improve your commute and extend your cycling range. Learn more about using both bike and transit from DART

History

The City’s first bike lanes opened in 2009 along Custer Parkway and Grove Road with significant resident influence. The popularity of these lanes led to the creation of additional bike lanes in subsequent years on Waterview Drive and portions of North Collins Boulevard, Apollo Road, Yale Boulevard, Canyon Creek Boulevard, East Collins Boulevard, and Owens Boulevard. In 2020, the City’s first protected bike lane was installed on Greenville Avenue increasing safety and comfort for cyclists by providing physical separation in the buffer between the vehicle travel lane and the bike lane. Additional bike lanes and trails will be added in other parts of the City as the 2023 Active Transportation Plan is implemented.
