Home MenuWalk & Roll Safety
At one point or another, everyone becomes a pedestrian, whether they are just walking across the street to get to their car or a runner trying to exercise. As anyone can become a pedestrian simply by walking or rolling to get to a location, it creates a significant need for people to understand how to be safe as a pedestrian. In efforts to help pedestrians be safer, the City of Richardson has provide some safety tips and resources.
Walking Safety Tips
- Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Other road users should expect pedestrians to use this space.
- Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and close to the curb.
- Look both ways before crossing the street and watch for cars while you are crossing the street.
- Make sure to follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. This helps to make sure both you and the driver have seen each other, making the crossing safer.
- Try to increase visibility while walking at night. Wear reflective or bright colors so other road users can see you.
- Unplug while walking, don't be a distracted walker.
